In which states is it legal to carry Mace/chemical sprays for personal protection? - carry pepper spray in florida

I live in Florida and often carry "pepper spray" to protect and (at least until now) never a cop tell me that it is legal. Who knows what are the requirements for transporting and / or use of these things in other states? (I am disabled and can not protect it with a gun at me if I wanted).
